RiftBound Competitive Tournaments Announcement

Competition in trading card games plays a huge role in both the enjoyment and longevity of the games. We’ve seen TCGs like Magic: The Gathering, Pokemon, and Yu-Gi-Oh! thrive for years, holding major competitive events where the best players compete. For top players in these games, it even became a job, with the chance to make a living by competing in these high-stakes events.
With Riot Games’ new trading card game, Riftbound, set to release in October, players are eagerly awaiting what the company has in store. Riot Games isn’t new to competitive card games—they ran a competitive circuit for Legends of Runeterra for years. While a digital card game’s competitive system is different from a physical one, the knowledge they gained can help them develop an even better competitive system for a physical TCG.
Today, we got news about Riot Games’ plans for Riftbound’s early release, they’re already planning Regional tournaments in 2025, giving players an incentive to take the game seriously right from the start.
The competitive circuit for Summoner Skirmish events will take place at local game stores twice per set, with each set separated by a month. Prizes include a participation promo and a Top 8 promo card, with additional prizes for the Top 4 and finals. Winners also earn a champion playmat and a bye in the first round of a regional tournament.
Regional tournaments start in December, with qualifiers based on the number of participants (e.g., Top 16 from 512 players). Regional events will offer promos, swag, cash prizes, and “Best Of” prizes for unique accomplishments (like off-meta deck runs).
Riot plans to host one or two regional championships in the first competitive season, potentially expanding to two or three in the future. These events will begin in October 2026 and include Last Chance Qualifiers, with top prizes like invites to the World Championship. Riot’s focus on organized play highlights how much planning has already gone into these events.
